Lice and Sports: How Athletes Can Prevent and Manage Lice

  • Lice Lifters

Youth sports are one of the best things a child can participate in — they build discipline, confidence, fitness, and friendships that last a lifetime. Across the Greater Washington DC area, from Silver Spring soccer leagues to Bethesda lacrosse programs and Rockville wrestling clubs, thousands of young athletes compete year-round. But the close physical contact that makes sports rewarding also creates opportunities for head lice to spread from one athlete to another. Learn more about our professional treatment process and how we eliminate lice in a single visit.

If your child is involved in sports and you are wondering whether lice and athletics are connected, you are asking the right question. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 6 to 12 million head lice infestations occur each year among children ages 3 to 11 in the United States. While the CDC emphasizes that lice spread primarily through direct head-to-head contact rather than through shared equipment, certain sports create exactly the kind of sustained close contact that facilitates transmission. Check out our related article on How to Choose the Right Lice Removal Clinic: What to Look For for more information.

This guide covers which sports carry the highest lice risk, how lice actually spread during athletic activities, what athletes and parents can do to prevent transmission, and what steps to take if someone on your child’s team has lice. If you’re ready to take action, book your appointment at Lice Lifters of Greater Washington today.

Which Sports Put Athletes at Higher Risk for Lice?

Not all sports carry equal risk for lice transmission. The key factor is how much direct head-to-head or head-to-body contact occurs during regular play. The CDC is clear that head lice are spread most commonly by direct contact with the hair of an infested person, and the American Academy of Pediatrics confirms that lice cannot jump or fly — they can only crawl from one head to another when heads are touching or very close together.

Understanding which sports involve the most contact helps parents and coaches focus their prevention efforts where they matter most.

High-Contact Sports With Elevated Lice Risk

  • Wrestling: Wrestling involves the most sustained head-to-head contact of any youth sport. Wrestlers’ heads are in direct contact for extended periods during holds, takedowns, and ground work. A study published in the Journal of Athletic Training found that skin-to-skin contact sports like wrestling have the highest rates of communicable skin conditions among student athletes, and lice fall into this category. Wrestling coaches in the Greater Washington area are among the most aware of lice risks because of this direct connection.
  • Football: While football players wear helmets, pre-game warm-ups, huddles, and locker room interactions involve close head proximity. Helmet sharing, though discouraged, still occurs and can transfer lice. The AAP notes that shared headgear is a secondary but real transmission vector. Youth football programs across Montgomery County and Prince George’s County often involve post-game celebrations where heads come into close contact.
  • Cheerleading and dance: These activities involve frequent close physical contact, stunting positions where heads are in close proximity, and shared hair accessories. Cheer squads often have team rituals involving group huddles, and the long hair common among participants makes both transmission and detection more challenging.
  • Basketball and soccer: While these sports involve less sustained head contact than wrestling, physical play under the basket, heading the ball, defensive pressing, and celebratory huddles all create brief windows of close contact. Over a season of practices and games, these moments accumulate.
  • Gymnastics: Spotting during routines, partner stretching, and close-quarters training on apparatus put gymnasts in regular close contact. Shared mats and equipment add a secondary risk factor, though the CDC notes that transmission through shared items is rare compared to direct contact.

Individual sports like swimming, track and field, and tennis carry lower risk because they involve less person-to-person contact. However, the locker room and team gathering aspects of any sport create some level of proximity that parents should be aware of. For more information about lice prevention in group settings, visit our camps and group settings page.

How Do Lice Spread During Athletic Activities?

Understanding the mechanics of lice transmission during sports helps parents and coaches separate real risks from exaggerated fears. The CDC provides clear guidance on how lice spread, and applying that guidance to the sports context gives families actionable knowledge.

Head lice are wingless insects that cannot jump, hop, or fly. They spread almost exclusively through direct head-to-head contact, crawling from the hair of one person to the hair of another when the two heads are touching or very close together for a sustained period. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that lice move at a speed of approximately 23 centimeters per minute, meaning they need more than a fleeting touch to successfully transfer.

Common Transmission Scenarios in Sports

  • During active play: Sports like wrestling, football, and basketball involve moments where athletes’ heads are in direct contact or within centimeters of each other. During a wrestling match, this contact can last for minutes at a time. During a football huddle, multiple heads are clustered together for play calls. These are the highest-risk moments because they provide the sustained proximity lice need to transfer.
  • In the locker room: Before and after practices and games, athletes are in close quarters, changing, stretching, and socializing. Locker rooms in Greater Washington area schools and recreation centers vary in size, but all involve proximity that is closer than typical classroom settings. The AAP notes that close personal contact is the primary risk factor, and locker rooms create exactly this environment.
  • Shared equipment and gear: The CDC states that spreading through contact with clothing or personal items is much less common than head-to-head contact. However, shared helmets, headbands, hair ties, towels, and pillows on team buses represent secondary transmission routes. Wrestling headgear, football helmets tried on by multiple players, and shared warm-up gear carry a small but real risk.
  • Team celebrations and huddles: Post-goal celebrations, pre-game huddles, and team bonding activities often involve athletes putting their heads together — literally. These moments are brief but frequent over the course of a season, and they occur in an atmosphere where no one is thinking about lice prevention.
  • Travel and overnight trips: Tournament travel, especially for club sports popular in the Greater Washington area, puts teammates in close quarters during bus rides, hotel stays, and meals. Sharing beds or sleeping bags during team travel is a documented scenario for lice transmission that the AAP includes in its risk assessment guidance.

The important takeaway for parents is that lice transmission during sports is real but not inevitable. The risk is manageable with awareness and simple precautions, and a single case on a team does not mean every teammate will be affected.

What Can Athletes and Parents Do to Prevent Lice From Sports?

Preventing lice in a sports setting does not require extreme measures or changes to how your child plays. The CDC recommends straightforward steps that reduce transmission risk without disrupting athletic participation. The most effective prevention strategies are practical, low-cost, and easy to maintain throughout the season.

The AAP emphasizes that prevention education is more effective than reactive policies like blanket head checks or excluding athletes from play. Teaching athletes and parents what to do — and what not to worry about — keeps the focus on practical risk reduction rather than unnecessary anxiety.

Practical Prevention Strategies for Families

  • Keep long hair tied back: The CDC recommends avoiding head-to-head contact and keeping long hair pulled back. Athletes with shoulder-length or longer hair should wear braids, buns, or tight ponytails during practices and games. This reduces the surface area of exposed hair that lice could crawl onto and physically limits how much contact occurs during play.
  • Do not share helmets or headgear: Each athlete should have their own properly fitted helmet, headband, and hair accessories. The AAP lists shared headgear as a secondary transmission risk. Label your child’s gear clearly and teach them not to borrow or lend head-related equipment, even from close friends on the team.
  • Use personal towels and bags: Each athlete should bring their own towel and keep personal items in a separate bag in the locker room. The CDC notes that lice can survive for up to two days off the human head, so freshly shed lice on a shared towel could theoretically transfer. Keeping personal items separate eliminates this secondary risk.
  • Perform regular head checks: The single most effective prevention practice is routine screening. The AAP recommends that parents perform regular head checks on their children, particularly after exposure to close-contact situations. A weekly check with a fine-toothed lice comb on wet, conditioned hair takes less than 10 minutes and catches infestations before they can spread.
  • Use preventive products: Lice prevention sprays containing natural repellent ingredients like rosemary, peppermint, or tea tree oil can make hair less attractive to lice. While the CDC notes that no repellent has been proven to prevent infestations entirely, many families find that preventive products combined with other strategies provide an additional layer of protection. Visit our products page for options designed for active families.
  • Educate without stigmatizing: Talk to your child about lice in a matter-of-fact way. Explain that lice are common, not a sign of poor hygiene, and that anyone can get them. The AAP emphasizes that stigma around lice leads to delayed reporting and treatment, which increases spread. Children who understand lice are more likely to tell you quickly if they notice symptoms.

What Should You Do if a Teammate Has Lice?

Hearing that someone on your child’s team has been diagnosed with lice can trigger anxiety, but the response should be measured and practical rather than panicked. The CDC and AAP both emphasize that lice outbreaks in group settings are manageable when families respond with accurate information rather than fear.

The AAP’s official position is that children with lice should not be excluded from school or activities, and the CDC supports the approach that children can finish the school day and return after treatment. This guidance applies to sports settings as well — a teammate with lice does not mean the entire team needs to stop playing or that your child is certain to be affected.

A Calm, Effective Response Plan

  • Check your child’s head immediately: Within 24 hours of learning about a teammate’s case, do a thorough head check on your child using a fine-toothed lice comb on wet, conditioned hair under bright light. The AAP recommends wet combing as the most reliable screening method because it immobilizes lice and makes them easier to spot.
  • Check all household members: If your child has lice, check everyone in the household. The CDC notes that siblings and parents who have close contact with an infested child should be screened because lice spread readily in family settings. Catching a household case early prevents a cycle of reinfection.
  • Do not isolate your child from the team: If your child does not have lice, there is no reason to pull them from practices or games. If they do have lice, treat them promptly and return them to sports as soon as treatment is complete. The AAP discourages exclusion policies because they cause unnecessary disruption without significantly reducing transmission.
  • Notify the coach or team manager: Confidential notification allows the coach to send a general awareness message to all team families without identifying the affected player. This prompts other parents to check their children, which is the most effective way to contain spread within a team. The AAP recommends this approach over team-wide screenings conducted by non-medical personnel.
  • Wash gear after the current practice or game cycle: Wash your child’s uniform, practice clothes, and towels in hot water and dry on high heat. The CDC states that lice and nits are killed by exposure to temperatures above 130 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes. Helmets and gear that cannot be washed can be sealed in a plastic bag for 48 hours, after which any lice will have died.
  • Seek professional treatment if needed: If your screening reveals lice, do not spend days trying home remedies while your child continues to attend practices and games. Professional treatment at Lice Lifters of Greater Washington resolves the problem in a single visit, allowing your child to return to the team quickly and with certainty that they are lice-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get lice from wearing someone else’s sports helmet?

Residents of Chevy Chase can schedule a same-day appointment at our clinic.

The risk is low but real. The CDC states that lice spread primarily through head-to-head contact, and transmission through shared items is much less common. However, a helmet worn by someone with an active infestation within the past 24 to 48 hours could harbor a live louse. The AAP recommends that athletes use their own helmets and headgear.

Which sport has the highest risk for lice transmission?

Wrestling carries the highest risk because of sustained direct head-to-head contact during matches and practices. Football, cheerleading, and basketball also involve significant close contact. The key risk factor is duration of head proximity — brief moments carry less risk than the prolonged contact that wrestling involves.

Should my child skip practice if a teammate has lice?

No. The AAP recommends that children with lice should not be excluded from school or activities after treatment, and teammates should not be excluded at all. Check your child’s head promptly, take preventive measures like tying back long hair, and continue normal activities unless your child is also found to have lice.

Can lice spread through shared wrestling mats?

The CDC notes that lice cannot survive long off the human head and that spread through contact with surfaces is uncommon. Wrestling mats are cleaned between uses at reputable facilities, and lice that fall onto a mat typically die within 24 hours without a blood meal. The primary risk in wrestling is the direct head-to-head contact between competitors, not the mat surface.

Families in Clarksburg can visit our lice treatment clinic for professional care.

How often should I check my child’s head during sports season?

The AAP recommends routine head checks as part of regular hygiene. For children in high-contact sports, a weekly check using a fine-toothed lice comb on wet, conditioned hair is a practical frequency that catches infestations early. Increase to twice-weekly checks if a case has been reported on the team.

What is the fastest way to treat lice so my child does not miss games?

Professional treatment at Lice Lifters of Greater Washington typically takes 60 to 90 minutes and resolves the infestation in a single visit. Your child can return to practice and games immediately after treatment. This is significantly faster than home treatments, which the CDC notes can require multiple applications over two to three weeks.

Keep your athlete in the game. Book an appointment at Lice Lifters of Greater Washington for fast, professional treatment that gets your child back on the field without missing a beat.

We classically got lice from school. I got the call to pick them up around 12, and by 1:30 we were in for treatment. My 4 and 8-year old were so well cared for. My older child was really nervous at first, but she got through it like a champ. My younger child was resistant to the treatment, but they knew all the tricks to get the job done without any tears! The whole process put my mind at ease!

We were vacationing in DC for the week and my daughter picked up lice at some point which we discovered on our last day before making the 10 hour drive home. Did a quick google search for clinics nearby and we found Sam. She was incredibly professional and knowledgeable, combing my daughter and niece out, along with my mother in law and myself. She was gentle but effective and gave me peace of mind after a very stressful afternoon. Facility was easy to find and park, and my girls enjoyed the service. It is well worth the money to ensure you haven’t left anything behind. 10 out of 10 would recommend if you’re in the area.

Once upon a time there was a family of five – four with very long, very thick hair – who managed to avoid lice for over a decade… until today.

With a snowstorm looming and panic setting in after spotting something, I called Lice Lifters for a quick head check. Turns out 4 out of 5 heads were infested. 😳 Eww.

From Bluey playing on the TV to Sam’s calm, patient, and incredibly reassuring approach, the experience was as positive as something like this can be. She carefully treated each child and made the whole process feel manageable and stress-free.

We left completely lice-free, educated, and so relieved. If this ever happens again (please no), we will call Sam and Lice Lifters without hesitation. Highly recommend!

Ms. Sam was amazing and was able to get my child in ASAP. She was great with both my kids (treated one, checked the other) and their long hair. Her calm presence and confidence in the midst of a difficult situation was very reassuring. This service, with expert treatment and comb out, plus it's 30-day guarantee, allowed us to be in and out very quickly as opposed to days of treating, checking, combing, and retreating. 100% recommend.

I had such a positive experience with this lice service. Sam was absolutely amazing, she went above and beyond to make me feel cared for. She was incredibly generous with her time, making sure I understood every step of the process and giving me clear explanations and advice. What stood out the most was how genuinely worried she was about me, not just treating the problem but making sure I felt supported and comfortable. It’s rare to find someone so thoughtful and attentive. I can’t recommend Sam and this service enough!
