Can My Child Go to School With Lice? Understanding No-Nit Policies

Home > Blog > Can My Child Go to School With Lice? Understanding No-Nit Policies

  • August 5, 2025
  • Lice Lifters

It is seven in the morning. You just found lice on your child’s head, the bus arrives in forty minutes, and you have no idea whether you are supposed to keep them home. This scenario plays out in households across Silver Spring, Rockville, Bethesda, and the broader Greater Washington DC area every week during the school year, and the conflicting information online makes the decision even harder. Learn more about our professional treatment process and how we eliminate lice in a single visit.

Some parents remember strict rules from their own childhood: one nit meant staying home until every last egg was combed out. Others have heard that the rules have changed but are not sure what the new standard is. The reality is that national medical organizations, school district policies, and individual school practices do not always align, leaving parents to navigate a patchwork of guidance when they need a clear answer. Check out our related article on Why Lice Keep Spreading in Schools and What Parents Can Do About It for more information.

This guide explains what the leading medical authorities recommend about school attendance and lice, what no-nit policies are and whether they are still enforced, what the AAP and CDC specifically say, and how parents in the Greater Washington area can navigate their school’s particular approach with confidence. If you’re ready to take action, book your appointment at Lice Lifters of Greater Washington today.

Can Your Child Go to School With an Active Lice Infestation?

The American Academy of Pediatrics has maintained since 2002 that a child with head lice should not be restricted from attending school. The AAP’s clinical report on head lice, most recently reaffirmed in 2022, states explicitly that no healthy child should be excluded from or allowed to miss school because of head lice or nits. The reasoning is grounded in both medical evidence and practical reality: by the time lice are detected, the child has typically had them for two to four weeks already, meaning any transmission that was going to occur in the school setting has likely already happened.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention supports this position. The CDC states that children diagnosed with live head lice do not need to be sent home early from school and can go home at the end of the day and be treated, then return to class after appropriate treatment has begun. This guidance reflects the consensus that the educational cost of sending a child home outweighs the marginal reduction in transmission risk from a few additional hours of school.

Why Medical Authorities Say Children Should Stay in School

The recommendation to keep children in school during a lice situation is not casual. It is based on decades of epidemiological evidence and practical observation.

  • Detection lag: The average time between initial infestation and detection is two to four weeks, according to the AAP. During this entire period, the child has been in school with lice. Sending them home on the day of detection does not undo weeks of prior exposure. The CDC uses this same reasoning to argue against immediate exclusion.
  • Transmission requires direct contact: Lice do not fly, jump, or hop. The CDC confirms that they can only crawl, and transmission requires direct head-to-head contact lasting several seconds to minutes. Classroom seating arrangements, where children sit upright at desks, present minimal transmission risk compared to play activities and sleepovers.
  • Educational cost is real: The AAP explicitly cites lost instructional time as a harm of exclusion policies. A child sent home for lice may miss a full day or more of school while treatment is arranged, and the cumulative academic impact across a school year is significant for children who experience repeated episodes.
  • Stigma amplification: Sending a child home during the school day signals to classmates that something is wrong. The AAP notes that the social stigma associated with lice is disproportionate to the medical significance of the condition, and school exclusion amplifies that stigma unnecessarily.
  • Treatment timing: The CDC notes that treatment can begin at the end of the school day without meaningfully increasing risk to other students. A child who attends school and begins treatment that evening is managed appropriately according to national guidelines.

The short answer to the morning question is: yes, your child can go to school. Begin treatment when they get home, and inform the school so they can monitor the situation. Visit our FAQ page for more common questions about lice management.

What Is a No-Nit Policy and Do Schools Still Enforce Them?

A no-nit policy requires children to be completely free of nits, the eggs that lice attach to hair shafts, before being allowed to return to school after treatment. These policies were widespread throughout American schools in the 1990s and early 2000s, and they were implemented with good intentions: prevent treated children from reinfesting their classmates. However, the evidence has consistently shown that no-nit policies do not achieve their intended goal.

The AAP recommended against no-nit policies in its 2002 clinical report and has maintained that recommendation through every subsequent update. The National Association of School Nurses issued a matching position statement. The CDC does not endorse no-nit policies. Despite this unified professional opposition, some schools, particularly private institutions, religious schools, and daycare programs in the Greater Washington area, continue to enforce nit-free return requirements either from institutional inertia or from a belief that stricter policies provide better protection.

The Problems With No-Nit Policies

Understanding why these policies fail helps parents advocate for evidence-based practices at their children’s schools.

  • Nits are not contagious: The AAP notes that nits are cemented to the hair shaft and cannot transfer from one child to another. Only a live, mobile louse can transfer, and only through direct head-to-head contact. A child with nits but no live lice poses zero transmission risk to classmates.
  • Most nits found at screening are non-viable: The AAP states that nits found more than a quarter inch from the scalp have likely already hatched or are dead. A 2008 study in Pediatrics found that only about 18 percent of children with nits alone went on to develop active infestations, meaning over 80 percent of children excluded under no-nit policies were kept home without cause.
  • Misidentification is common: Even trained professionals misidentify hair debris, DEC plugs, and dandruff as nits. Studies report misidentification rates of 30 to 50 percent. No-nit policies amplify the consequences of these diagnostic errors by converting a false positive into a school absence.
  • Disproportionate impact on vulnerable families: Research in the Journal of School Nursing documented that no-nit policies result in significantly more missed school days for children from lower-income families, who may have less access to professional nit-removal services and cannot always arrange immediate retreatment to meet the school’s return requirements.
  • No evidence of reduced transmission: Multiple studies comparing schools with and without no-nit policies found no statistically significant difference in lice incidence rates. The policies create a false sense of security without delivering the transmission reduction they promise.

If your child’s school enforces a no-nit policy, professional treatment that includes thorough nit removal can get them back in the classroom the next day. Our education program also provides presentations to schools and parent groups about evidence-based lice policies.

What Do the AAP and CDC Recommend About School Attendance?

The AAP and CDC are not vague about their positions. Their recommendations are specific, evidence-based, and have been consistent for over two decades. The AAP’s 2015 clinical report, which remains the current guidance, states that school exclusion for head lice is not warranted and that children should be allowed to remain in school and receive treatment at the end of the day. The CDC echoes this: children with live lice do not need to be sent home early and can finish the school day before beginning treatment.

These recommendations are rooted in a body of evidence that has grown steadily since the early 2000s. A landmark 2005 study published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health examined lice incidence in schools that abandoned no-nit policies versus those that retained them and found no increase in cases after the policy was dropped. Similar results have been replicated across multiple school districts in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

The Specific AAP and CDC Guidelines Parents Should Know

Having the exact language from these organizations helps when discussing policy with school administrators.

  • AAP on school exclusion: “No healthy child should be excluded from school or allowed to miss school time because of head lice or nits.” This is a direct quote from the AAP’s clinical report. It applies to both live lice and nit-only findings.
  • CDC on same-day attendance: “Students diagnosed with live head lice do not need to be sent home early from school; they can go home at the end of the day, be treated, and return to class after appropriate treatment has begun.” The emphasis on “appropriate treatment has begun” means a child can return after the first treatment session, not after all nits are removed.
  • AAP on nit-only findings: “Nits found more than 1 cm from the scalp are very unlikely to be viable and should not prevent a child from attending school.” This directly contradicts no-nit policies that exclude children for any nits regardless of location.
  • CDC on reinfestation risk: The CDC states that the risk of reinfestation from classmates is not meaningfully reduced by keeping a treated child out of school. The primary reinfestation risk comes from household contacts who are not treated simultaneously, not from the school environment.
  • Joint recommendation on treatment timing: Both the AAP and CDC recommend that treatment begin before the child returns to school the next day. A child treated the evening of detection and returning the following morning meets the standard of care recommended by both organizations.

When you know what the AAP and CDC actually say, you are in a much stronger position to have a productive conversation with your school if their policy does not align with national medical guidance.

How Should Parents Navigate School Lice Policies?

Knowing the medical recommendations is one thing. Navigating the reality of your specific school’s policy is another. In the Greater Washington DC area, families encounter a range of approaches depending on whether their child attends a public school, a private school, a charter school, or a faith-based program. Each may have different policies, different enforcement levels, and different expectations for parents. The CDC recommends that parents familiarize themselves with their school’s specific policy at the start of each school year so they are not scrambling to learn the rules during an active infestation.

The practical reality is that even when a school’s official policy aligns with AAP and CDC recommendations, the school nurse or administrator who implements that policy may interpret it differently. Some school health staff are fully up to date on current guidelines. Others are working from the framework they learned years ago. Approaching the situation with factual information and a collaborative tone tends to produce the best outcomes for your child.

Practical Steps for Working With Your School

These strategies help you advocate for your child while maintaining a positive relationship with school staff.

  • Know the policy before you need it: Ask for the school’s written lice policy at the beginning of the year, during orientation or back-to-school night. The AAP recommends that school policies be transparent and available to all families. Knowing the policy in advance prevents surprises during an infestation.
  • Lead with the AAP guidance: If you need to discuss the policy with a school administrator, referencing the AAP clinical report carries weight. Print or email the relevant section. School nurses and administrators generally respect AAP guidance even if their school has not formally updated its policy to match.
  • Get treatment documentation: If your school requires proof of treatment before readmission, professional treatment providers can supply documentation. At Lice Lifters of Greater Washington, we provide written confirmation of treatment completion that schools accept as clearance.
  • Request a private conversation: If you disagree with how the school is handling your child’s situation, request a private meeting with the school nurse or health aide rather than debating in front of other parents or your child. Policy discussions are more productive when both sides have time and privacy.
  • Offer to be part of the solution: Suggest that the school’s PTA or health committee host a lice education session at the start of the school year. When schools have access to current information, they are more likely to adopt evidence-based practices. Our education program provides these sessions at no cost to Greater Washington area schools.

Your goal is to get your child back in the classroom with minimal disruption while ensuring they receive proper treatment. In most cases, a combination of prompt professional treatment and clear communication with the school achieves this within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the AAP says kids can stay in school, why do some schools still send them home?

School policies are set by local administrators and school boards, not by medical organizations. Many schools have not updated their policies to reflect the AAP’s current recommendations. Institutional inertia, parental pressure, and liability concerns all contribute to the persistence of exclusion-based policies despite the medical evidence against them.

Can I keep my child home by choice even if the school allows attendance?

That is your decision as a parent. Some families prefer to keep their child home on the day of detection to begin treatment immediately and reduce the (already low) chance of spreading lice to close friends. The AAP’s guidance does not prevent you from keeping your child home; it prevents the school from requiring it.

What if another parent complains about my child being in school with lice?

Other parents’ concerns are understandable, but your child’s right to attend school is supported by the AAP and CDC. The school’s responsibility is to follow its policy and educate concerned parents about lice transmission facts. You are not obligated to disclose your child’s lice status to other parents, though voluntary disclosure can help others screen their own children.

Does my child need to be nit-free before returning to school?

The AAP and CDC both say no. A child who has been treated for live lice can return to school even if nits remain. Nits attached to the hair shaft do not transfer to other children and, particularly those found more than a quarter inch from the scalp, are likely non-viable. If your school requires nit-free status, professional nit removal can meet this requirement quickly.

How long after treatment should my child wait before returning to school?

The CDC recommends that treatment begin before the child returns to school. A child treated the evening of detection can return the following morning. At Lice Lifters of Greater Washington, our single-visit treatment is completed in one session, and we recommend returning to school the next day.

What documentation can I get to prove my child was treated?

Professional treatment clinics, including Lice Lifters of Greater Washington, provide written treatment confirmation that includes the date, the method used, and a statement that the child has been treated. Most schools accept this documentation for readmission purposes. Your pediatrician can also provide a return-to-school note after examining your child.

The morning panic of finding lice on your child’s head does not have to turn into a multi-day ordeal of missed school, frantic cleaning, and uncertain treatments. Get the facts, get treatment, and get your child back to learning. Book an appointment at Lice Lifters of Greater Washington for same-day professional treatment, and we will have your family back to normal by tomorrow morning.

We classically got lice from school. I got the call to pick them up around 12, and by 1:30 we were in for treatment. My 4 and 8-year old were so well cared for. My older child was really nervous at first, but she got through it like a champ. My younger child was resistant to the treatment, but they knew all the tricks to get the job done without any tears! The whole process put my mind at ease!

We were vacationing in DC for the week and my daughter picked up lice at some point which we discovered on our last day before making the 10 hour drive home. Did a quick google search for clinics nearby and we found Sam. She was incredibly professional and knowledgeable, combing my daughter and niece out, along with my mother in law and myself. She was gentle but effective and gave me peace of mind after a very stressful afternoon. Facility was easy to find and park, and my girls enjoyed the service. It is well worth the money to ensure you haven’t left anything behind. 10 out of 10 would recommend if you’re in the area.

Once upon a time there was a family of five – four with very long, very thick hair – who managed to avoid lice for over a decade… until today.

With a snowstorm looming and panic setting in after spotting something, I called Lice Lifters for a quick head check. Turns out 4 out of 5 heads were infested. 😳 Eww.

From Bluey playing on the TV to Sam’s calm, patient, and incredibly reassuring approach, the experience was as positive as something like this can be. She carefully treated each child and made the whole process feel manageable and stress-free.

We left completely lice-free, educated, and so relieved. If this ever happens again (please no), we will call Sam and Lice Lifters without hesitation. Highly recommend!

Ms. Sam was amazing and was able to get my child in ASAP. She was great with both my kids (treated one, checked the other) and their long hair. Her calm presence and confidence in the midst of a difficult situation was very reassuring. This service, with expert treatment and comb out, plus it's 30-day guarantee, allowed us to be in and out very quickly as opposed to days of treating, checking, combing, and retreating. 100% recommend.

I had such a positive experience with this lice service. Sam was absolutely amazing, she went above and beyond to make me feel cared for. She was incredibly generous with her time, making sure I understood every step of the process and giving me clear explanations and advice.
