Daycare & Preschool Lice: A Guide for Parents of Young Children

Home > Blog > Daycare & Preschool Lice: A Guide for Parents of Young Children

  • August 19, 2025
  • Lice Lifters

Discovering that your toddler or preschooler has head lice can feel overwhelming — they’re so little, and the thought of tiny bugs in their hair triggers an instinctive, protective urgency. If your young child attends daycare or preschool in Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda, Fairfax, Silver Spring, and Rockville, take a breath: this is one of the most common childhood issues, and it’s completely treatable with the right approach.

Why Young Children Are Particularly Vulnerable to Head Lice

Children between the ages of two and five are in a uniquely high-risk group for head lice, and it has nothing to do with hygiene. The CDC estimates that 6 to 12 million lice infestations occur each year among U.S. children aged 3 to 11, and the youngest in that range are disproportionately affected because of how they interact with one another throughout the day.

Daycare and preschool environments are essentially perfect conditions for lice transmission. Young children haven’t yet developed the sense of personal space that older kids and adults maintain. They hug freely, lean head-to-head over picture books, and tumble together during play — and head-to-head contact is the primary way lice spread.

The Daycare and Preschool Risk Factors

Several features of early-childhood settings create more opportunities for lice to move from one child to another than you might find in an elementary school classroom.

  • Nap mats and cots placed side by side mean children’s heads are often just inches apart during rest time, creating prolonged close contact that lice can exploit
  • Shared dress-up clothes and costume bins are a staple of imaginative play, and while lice don’t survive long off the scalp, hats, scarves, and wigs tried on in quick succession can occasionally facilitate transfer
  • Stuffed animals and soft toys that are cuddled and shared throughout the day may harbor a stray louse for a brief period — the CDC notes that lice can survive up to 48 hours off a human host under ideal conditions
  • Close physical contact during group activities like circle time, story time, and art projects naturally brings young heads together in a way that older children’s activities typically do not

“Parents of very young children are often surprised when they get the lice call from daycare,” says a Lice Lifters treatment specialist. “But when you consider how these little ones spend their days — hugging, sharing, napping together — it makes perfect sense. The good news is that it’s entirely manageable.”

Age-Appropriate Treatment Considerations

Treating a two-year-old for lice is a fundamentally different experience than treating a ten-year-old. Young children have more sensitive scalps, shorter attention spans, and less ability to sit still for extended periods. They also cannot always communicate what they’re feeling, which makes gentle, non-toxic treatment especially important.

Many over-the-counter lice treatments contain pesticides like permethrin or pyrethrins. While these products are approved for use on children as young as two months (depending on the formulation), many parents of toddlers and preschoolers are understandably uncomfortable applying chemical pesticides to their young child’s scalp. According to a study published in the Journal of Medical Entomology, resistance to permethrin-based treatments has been documented in at least 42 of 48 states tested, meaning these products may not even work — and you’ve exposed your child to chemicals unnecessarily.

What Parents of Young Children Should Know About Treatment

Choosing the right treatment approach for a toddler or preschooler requires understanding what’s safe, what’s effective, and what’s realistic given your child’s developmental stage.

  • Avoid any product not explicitly labeled for your child’s age — some OTC treatments are only approved for children aged four and up, and “natural” products purchased online may lack proper safety testing for very young children
  • Shorter treatment times matter because a squirming two-year-old will not tolerate a 60-minute home combing session the way an older child might; professional treatment is designed to be thorough yet efficient
  • Sensitivity to ingredients is heightened in young children whose skin barrier is still developing, making all-natural, non-toxic formulations the safest choice for delicate scalps
  • Emotional comfort is part of effective treatment — a screaming, terrified toddler makes thorough nit removal nearly impossible, which is why a calm, experienced professional environment makes a meaningful difference

The AAP emphasizes that the goal of treatment is eliminating live lice, not necessarily achieving a perfectly nit-free scalp immediately. For young children especially, a gentle approach that effectively kills live lice without causing distress is far preferable to aggressive chemical treatments that may not even succeed.

Professional Treatment for Toddlers and Preschoolers at Lice Lifters

When your little one has lice, you want it handled safely, completely, and quickly — and that’s exactly what Lice Lifters of Greater Washington delivers. Our treatment process was designed with children of all ages in mind, including the youngest and most sensitive.

We use an all-natural, non-toxic treatment that contains no harsh pesticides, no chemical irritants, and nothing that would concern a pediatrician. There are no heated-air devices involved — just our proven, gentle protocol administered by experienced technicians who work with toddlers and preschoolers every week.

Treatment is completed in a single visit, which means no multi-day regimens, no repeated applications, and no hoping the product worked. Our technicians understand how to keep young children comfortable and even entertained during the process. Many parents tell us their toddler handled it far better than they expected.

And because we offer a 30-day guarantee, you have the peace of mind that if any issue arises in the weeks following treatment, we’ll take care of it at no additional cost.

“We’ve treated children as young as 12 months,” shares a Lice Lifters technician. “We know how to make the experience as calm and positive as possible. Parents are often relieved to see their child relaxed and even smiling during treatment — it’s a world away from the battle they were expecting at home.”

Working With Your Daycare: Communication, Policies, and Prevention

Getting your child treated is half the equation. The other half is navigating the daycare or preschool’s policies, communicating effectively with staff, and taking steps to reduce the chances of reinfestation.

Daycare lice policies vary widely across Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda, Fairfax, Silver Spring, and Rockville. Some centers follow strict no-nit rules that keep children out until every egg is removed. Others follow the AAP’s recommendation and allow return after treatment for live lice. Knowing your center’s policy before an outbreak occurs can save you significant stress.

Communicating With Your Daycare or Preschool

Open, proactive communication with your child’s caregivers creates a better outcome for your family and the entire classroom.

  • Notify the center promptly and without embarrassment — lice are not a reflection of your home’s cleanliness, and early notification allows staff to check other children and prevent further spread
  • Ask for the center’s written lice policy so you understand exactly what’s required for re-entry; if they don’t have one, suggest they develop clear guidelines based on CDC recommendations
  • Provide documentation from your treatment provider because professional clearance from Lice Lifters of Greater Washington carries more weight than a parent’s verbal assurance and helps your child return faster
  • Request that the center take preventive measures such as separating nap mats by a few extra inches, assigning individual cubbies for hats and jackets, and washing shared dress-up items regularly

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the best practice for childcare centers is to inform families of a classroom lice case without identifying the affected child, then provide educational materials on detection and treatment. If your center isn’t following this standard, you can share the resource with the director.

Preventing Reinfestation in Young Children

Once your child is treated, a few simple habits can significantly reduce the risk of lice returning — especially important in the close-contact world of daycare and preschool.

Prevention starts at home but extends to the daycare environment. Teach your child, in age-appropriate language, about keeping their head away from other children’s heads. While a two-year-old won’t fully grasp the concept, even simple reminders like “keep your hat on your own head” begin building awareness.

At home, wash your child’s bedding, recently worn hats, and any loveys or stuffed animals that go back and forth to daycare in hot water — at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit, as recommended by the CDC. Items that can’t be washed can be sealed in a plastic bag for 48 hours, which is sufficient to kill any lice that may have strayed from the scalp.

Consider incorporating Lice Lifters’ preventive products into your child’s daily routine. Our mint-based repellent spray is gentle enough for young children and helps deter lice during the school day — a small step that can make a significant difference in a high-contact environment.

Give Your Little One the Gentle Treatment They Deserve

Your toddler or preschooler didn’t do anything wrong — lice are simply a reality of early childhood, especially in daycare and preschool settings across Alexandria, Arlington, Bethesda, Fairfax, Silver Spring, and Rockville. What matters is how you respond. Skip the chemical guesswork, the multi-day home treatments that leave both you and your child in tears, and the uncertainty of wondering whether it worked.

Lice Lifters of Greater Washington offers all-natural, non-toxic treatment in a single visit, with a 30-day guarantee and the professional documentation your daycare needs. Book your child’s appointment today and let our experienced team take the stress off your shoulders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can babies and toddlers under two get lice treatment at Lice Lifters?

Yes. Lice Lifters treats children of all ages, including infants and toddlers. Our all-natural, non-toxic products are safe for the most sensitive scalps, and our technicians are experienced in working with very young children who may be restless or anxious.

How did my toddler get lice at daycare?

Head lice spread primarily through direct head-to-head contact, which is extremely common among young children during play, nap time, and group activities. Lice cannot jump or fly — they crawl from one head to another when heads touch. It has nothing to do with cleanliness.

Should I pull my child out of daycare during a lice outbreak?

That’s generally not necessary. Once your child has been professionally treated at Lice Lifters, they are safe to return. Removing your child from care disrupts their routine and your schedule without meaningfully reducing their future risk, since lice are a recurring reality in group childcare settings.

Are over-the-counter lice treatments safe for toddlers?

Some OTC products are approved for children as young as two months, but many contain pesticides that have shown increasing resistance — studies indicate failure rates of 25% to 30% in some areas. Additionally, the application process can be difficult with a young child. Lice Lifters’ all-natural approach avoids these concerns entirely.

How can I check my toddler for lice at home?

Use a fine-toothed nit comb on wet, conditioned hair in bright light. Part the hair into small sections and comb from the scalp outward, wiping the comb on a white paper towel after each pass. Look for tiny tan or brown specks (nits) attached to the hair shaft near the scalp, and for small grayish-white insects (live lice). If you’re unsure, Lice Lifters of Greater Washington offers professional head checks.

We classically got lice from school. I got the call to pick them up around 12, and by 1:30 we were in for treatment. My 4 and 8-year old were so well cared for. My older child was really nervous at first, but she got through it like a champ. My younger child was resistant to the treatment, but they knew all the tricks to get the job done without any tears! The whole process put my mind at ease!

We were vacationing in DC for the week and my daughter picked up lice at some point which we discovered on our last day before making the 10 hour drive home. Did a quick google search for clinics nearby and we found Sam. She was incredibly professional and knowledgeable, combing my daughter and niece out, along with my mother in law and myself. She was gentle but effective and gave me peace of mind after a very stressful afternoon. Facility was easy to find and park, and my girls enjoyed the service. It is well worth the money to ensure you haven’t left anything behind. 10 out of 10 would recommend if you’re in the area.

Once upon a time there was a family of five – four with very long, very thick hair – who managed to avoid lice for over a decade… until today.

With a snowstorm looming and panic setting in after spotting something, I called Lice Lifters for a quick head check. Turns out 4 out of 5 heads were infested. 😳 Eww.

From Bluey playing on the TV to Sam’s calm, patient, and incredibly reassuring approach, the experience was as positive as something like this can be. She carefully treated each child and made the whole process feel manageable and stress-free.

We left completely lice-free, educated, and so relieved. If this ever happens again (please no), we will call Sam and Lice Lifters without hesitation. Highly recommend!

Also loved the explanations of how the lice spread and how to clean our home. Hopefully, we never get lice again, but if we do, I'm definitely coming back here.

Ms. Sam was amazing and was able to get my child in ASAP. She was great with both my kids (treated one, checked the other) and their long hair. Her calm presence and confidence in the midst of a difficult situation was very reassuring. This service, with expert treatment and comb out, plus it's 30-day guarantee, allowed us to be in and out very quickly as opposed to days of treating, checking, combing, and retreating. 100% recommend.

I had such a positive experience with this lice service. Sam was absolutely amazing, she went above and beyond to make me feel cared for. She was incredibly generous with her time, making sure I understood every step of the process and giving me clear explanations and advice. What stood out the most was how genuinely worried she was about me, not just treating the problem but making sure I felt supported and comfortable. It’s rare to find someone so thoughtful and attentive. I can’t recommend Sam and this service enough!
